Now, this show has gotten better again. While Season 1 was absolutely great, the novelty slightly wore off during Season two where some of the situations were simply not that funny.It still stars the stellar cast of Tina Fey as Liz Lemon and Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy, her boss at NBC. While the writing is extremely clever and these two actors are plendid, some of the secondary cast members are slightly over-the-top and do distract such as Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski. Well anyway as I wrote the comedy is better than in Season two even if as usual it is slightly over-aware of its "impact". Indeed, as most SNL-derived comedy, it tends to be somewhat superior in its approach and over-smug. However this show can afford it due to its brilliant acting and writing. Sometimes the humour is of the flat "I am great" SNL style but not too often. The show could use a more relaxed kind of comedy sometines but overall it is a joy to wtach and it does deserve all the praise it gets.

This is the best show on tv. Don't argue with me about it. I am right. Alec Baldwin gives a comedic acting lesson every time he is on the screen. You cannot take your eyes off him. His brilliant monologue when he and Tracey are in therapy won him the Emmy again this year. The cast gets better and better and the guest stars! Carrie Fisher, Alan Alda, Elaine Stritch, Jon Hamm... everyone wants to be on this show. Salma Hayek has never been better and Jennifer Aniston almost looked like she could act. I can't wait for the premiere of season 4.

"30 Rock", the NBC sitcom that has the most Emmy Awards (22) for a single year for a comedy series. An award-winning series that is critically acclaimed series that in its first and second year, despite being a series that critics raved about, the series has had its challenge due to its low viewership.

Fortunately, NBC has supported this series and greenlighted a fourth season because "30 ROCK" is unique and one of those rare delights that is on network television. Humorous, entertaining but literally, just a fantastic comedy that has solid writing and a talented cast.

30 Rock is the shortened address of where NBC Studios is located in New York City, ala 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The show revolves around the crew and the cast of the live sketch comedy "The Girlie Show" which is written by head writer Liz Lemon (Tina Fey, "Saturday Night Live", "Baby Mama", "Mean Girls") and stars actress Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski, "Ally McBeal"). But Liz's boss, Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin, "Knots Landing", "Beetlejuice", "Pearl Harbor") decides to add comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan, "Saturday Night Live", "Scare Tactics") to spice up the show and rename it "TGS with Tracy Jordan".

The show focuses on what goes behind-the-scenes of the creation of the show and what is going on in the personal lives of several of the main characters (primarily focusing on the lives of Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy) and focuses on relationships and the unique friendship that Jack and Liz tend to develop, while the two deal with their own love life but also their interaction with the writers of TGS and the NBC Page Kenneth Parcell (Jack MacBrayer, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", "Arrested Development").

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"30 ROCK - SEASON 3 is presented in Anamorphic Widescreen 1:78:1. The television series is shot via single camera and has that drama series style of quality. But for the most part, the show is anamorphic widescreen and picture quality is satisfactory for what you would expect from television on DVD.

As for audio, audio is presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1. For home theater owners with a receiver, the audio is front and channel driven with the dialogue being clear and understandable and the opening theme song coming quite lively. But for the most part, the audio is satisfactory for a comedy. Personally, I had my receiver set at stereo on all channels as my primary selection and preference in hearing the series.

Subtitles are presented in English SDH.

JUDGMENT CALL:

I absolutely love "30 ROCK". The third season showed no signs of slowdown and every episode, you just want to laugh because the characters are hilarious but most of all, the writing is just top notch. And all 22 episodes in the third season does not disappoint at all.

With the second season DVD release from last year, the show was really facing major challenges as the Writers Guild Strike really cut down on the episodes and no one knew if NBC was going to cancel the show but they gave it some time and next thing you know, the show won many awards. The fact that the show has been nominated for 22 awards in 2009 alone is a testament of how people respect the show's writing and its talent. As mentioned earlier in my review, "30 ROCK" is one of those rare and unique shows on television and everything manages to work perfectly.

I've watched Season 3 on television and I couldn't wait to watch the episodes again, that's how much I really enjoy this series. It's witty, fun and comedy that is highly entertaining! In fact, as for favorite episodes, there is just so many. From finding out who Liz Lemon was talking to on the plane ride in the episode "Believe in the Stars", to see the reuniting of the "Night Court" characters and also see Jennifer Aniston's "Claire" getting into mischief in "The One with the Cast of Night Court", Kenneth going on a date with a blind staffer with Tracy's help in "St. Valentine's Day", Jack seeing a duplicate of himself on the Spanish soap opera in "Generalissimo" or Liz and Jack visiting Liz's high school reunion in the episode titled "Reunion". There are just too many fantastic episodes from this third season, that I can't see any fan being disappointed.

As for the DVD release of "30 ROCK - Season 3, this DVD is literally a solid release. Not only do you get all 22 episodes, 7 audio commentary (and the good news is that they give a variety of talent, even guest stars a chance to take part in the audio commentary) but you also get a good number of other special features that really round out this wonderful DVD release. Overall, the show is wonderful and the only thing I can hope for is that Universal considers releasing "30 Rock" on Blu-ray via High Definition.

But there is nothing negative I can say about this release. It's a solid release and fans of the series will definitely get their money's worth! "30 ROCK - Season 3 is highly recommended.

i watch this show every thursday and fall out of my seat laughing and people say alec is funnier than steve carell that is when i draw the line because michael scott is one of the funniest characters in tv history and i am glad both shows go back to back and thursday when all the seasons are going it is going to be awesome 1st snl thur,2nd parks and recreation then 30 rock then the office then every weekday there will be jays new show but when it follows on thursday my stomach will hurt cant wait for nbc thursaday this fall and that new show community looks kind of bad but nbc comedy has not really dissapointed me yet in the past 3 years best comedy network on tv

"Alec Baldwin--Funniest Man on TV" 2009-07-23

There is so much to love about 30 ROCK but incredibly the best part is the funniest comedic actor working in tv today, Alec Baldwin. There were a few hints that he might have this comedic ability: his stints guesting on SNL as host and his semi comedic turn as the dim witted con in MIAMI BLUES. Nevertheless, one is hard pressed to reconcile his comedic portrayal as the head of NBC with the actor who opened GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS with the historic "closing is for closers" soliloquy. For three seasons though I have laughed and laughed as his character has only expanded and gotten funnier. This is especially amazing considering he is sharing screen time with some of SNL's biggest alumni. Tina Fey does a fabulous writing job and is excellent as everyone's hard pressed straight woman Liz Lemon. Fey plays the head writer of a tv show which is just like SNL. She stands between her staff of writers and comedians and the head of programming, Jack, played by Baldwin. Her writers and comedians are to a person barely sane on a daily basis. The other three supporting characters are Tracy and Jenna as competing comedic costars on Lemon's show and Kenneth, a page at NBC, who as a hick from the sticks is a foil for everyone else's urbanity. I think Tracy and Jenna were originally intended to be bigger than Jack/Baldwin on the show but Baldwin had little trouble upstaging them in short order. All three spin around him and Liz Lemon and as supporting characters they are excellent. I've seen all three seasons . For me it replaced the huge gap left by the end of FRASIER and SEINFELD.

I love this show and was so excited for season 3, thankfully I was not disappointed! Jimmy Smitts' character is amazing and adds a whole new level to what we know about Dexter.

In a nutshell, if you like the show, you will love season 3, it may be the best season yet! If you've never seen the show, you need to either buy seasons 1-3 immediately OR call your cable provider and get Showtime - all seasons of Dexter are now on On Demand for Showtime because season 4 has just started.

A funny, disturbing, insightful show about a sociopathic serial killer/blood splatter expert for the police who, at times, is more human than the other "normal" people on the show.

Disfunction at its greatest, and amazing how they can have a great idea and completly ruin it and others lives in a mere half-hour. GENIUSLY DELICIOUS!! The live play of The Nightman Cometh, is not to be missed!

This season is simply not as good as the previous ones. While the previous seasons were excentric and wild, in a most unusual way, here the attempts to go for gross-outs actually spolis the humour. The cast is great as the bunch of low-lifes who run Paddy's bar in Philadelphia but while there was acrazy funny side to the humour, now it is simply crazed. Danny De Vito was allways a problem because his character is not likeable at all in this series. The titles of the episodes say all: Mac and Charlie Die, Who Pooped the bed, Sweet Dee has a heart attack.... It does simply not hold up to the standards of the first seasons, which were irreverent funny. The worst bar in Philadelphia episode is the best and goes quite over the top with the gang kidnapping a restaurant reviewer for sacking their pub. The live performance featurette is good. there are still som funny moments but you will be better off starting with seasons 1 and 2.

I am so glad to as Season 4 to complete my collection of every season to date! It was delivered at the perfect time a few days before Season 5 started on FX. This is quite possibly the funniest show on TV right now. The hilarious adventures of D, mack, charlie and Denis never fail to surprise me and I am so glad that now I can watch episodes from last season whenever I want. Danny Devito is unforgettable as the troll in the Nightman Cometh musical from the final episode. Now I can't wait for the release of A Very Sunny Christmas to see how this dysfunctional gang handles the holidays!

I'm a huge fan of the show. However, I was very dissapointed with this boxset. For me, the dvd extras and commentaries are what makes a dvd worth owning. This season of Sunny has scant extras and is not worth the purchase if all you want is to watch the episodes. Nowadays if you only want the episodes you can watch them on Hulu or DVR them. Compared to the previous seasons dvd's whoever put this one out added no content to justify the price. This is a great show and I highly recommend it, but if you want to watch the entire season or just catch yourself up on certain episodes save yourself $20 and rent this one.

As awesome as the series is and how much I enjoy watching it. why did they mess with the packageing formula and not use the two slim dvd cases in a carboard slide like they did with the last three seasons? it sticks out like a sore thumb on my dvd shelf. but the series is awesome. a must have for ppl with excellent taste in comedy.

"A series in decline? Not so fast!" 2009-10-01

Much like Season 3, Season 4 of How I Met Your Mother was strongly affected by outside influences. For Season 3, the writers' strike interrupted the flow at very nearly the halfway point of the season, and most the rest of the episodes felt rushed and incomplete.

Season 4 was similarly affected by the pregnancies of stars Cobie Smulders (Robin) and Alyson Hannigan (Lily). While the show gamely poked fun at the pregnancies--neither Robin nor Lily was pregnant, and their baby bumps were hidden or shown in outrageous-but-creative ways--the real-world exigencies that go along with impending motherhood did impact the show, with Hannigan's leave taking her completely out of four episodes (albeit with a hilarious exit strategy).

The producers elected to film the Season 4 Finale, "The Leap," in January. At that time, Hannigan was barely showing and Smulders was barely pregnant. This allowed them to do some of the more physical bits in the episode, as well as working a full shooting schedule, which would become impossible as the pregnancies progressed.

So with The Leap in the can, they had what many would consider an ideal situation: they knew what the end result of their story arcs was and so could have used the last half of S4 to set it up.

Unfortunately, that's not what happened. Instead of giving us 7 or 8 episodes that built to this inevitable climax, most of the last half of S4 came off as stand-alone fillers, largely featuring Barney as a main character. While Barney is almost unanimously considered the funniest character on the show, I think he tends to work better in support of the stories or as part of an ensemble story than he does when he's the full focus of them.

Still, for all the difficulties getting the show out of the gate during S4, the season did provide viewers with some truly classic HIMYM episodes the likes of which were common in Seasons 1 and 2, including "Intervention," "Shelter Island," "Woooo!," and "Three Days of Snow."

This season featured two major arcs, neither of which really appealed to me: in the Stella Arc, Ted's relationship with Stella continues from where it left off in S3's cliffhanger, resulting in some very strong episodes and some painfully weak ones; in the Barney Arc, the groundwork for the current direction of the show was set with Barney believing he was in love with Robin and struggling with his desire to pursue her and how it conflicted with his womanizing Awesomeness. This arc--which is not one I care for--is much more herky-jerky than the Stella arc, with lots of inconsistent character behaviors and Barney producing a hitherto unheard-of list of women he's slept with on his way to his goal of 200 conquests...another aspect of the character revealed suddenly, inconsistent with what has gone before (see S1's "Game Night" and S3's "The Yips").

Both arcs culminate in the S4 finale, "The Leap," setting up S5, which premiered recently. A number of fans really like "The Leap," particularly those who have been waiting for the spark between Robin and Barney to ignite. I thought it was actually the weakest of the four season finales so far, primarily because it feels like they didn't know the details when they shot it. For example, we learn in the episode that Ted is taking a job at Columbia University teaching Architecture. What we don't learn is where he got the lead on that job. Of course, from previous episodes, we know where that lead came from, but the dots never quite connect to the finale: the finale feels like "here's where we think we want to go" without having a sense that they knew how they were going to get there, and, for me, it ultimately felt very sloppy. Rather than having a complete, tight finale as a target to shoot for, they seemed to choose a couple of events even though they didn't have any idea what would precipitate them. They had planned too little of the story at the time the finale was shot.

As I write this, two episodes of S5 have aired: "Definitions" and "Double Date." "Definitions" was something of a mess as Lily forced the Robin/Barney relationship to be defined, showing the "caring but arrogant" side of her that seems to be most of her personality these days. "Double Date" was much more on-target...my favorite episode since "Three Days of Snow." More importantly, though, these first two S5 episodes feel much more solid than most of S4, as though more time was allotted and taken to make sure they fit. Both are beautifully shot and meticulously edited, and "Double Date" uses some very impressive visual effects in a very creative way.

So after two years of being frustrated with a show that seemed to be losing its direction and not living up to the potential it proved in its first two seasons, S5 seems to be back on the right track. Let's just hope some outside force doesn't come along and derail it this year.

After years of what felt like a collection of stale broadcast TV sitcoms, I was introduced to How I Met Your Mother. While I've never been a big fan of any particular sitcom, this show got me excited about the genre for the first time ever. I was introduced to it by my sister, who brought a borrowed copy of the third season on DVD home with her from college. I ended up watching a few episodes and was very pleasantly surprised by How I Met Your Mother -- it was absolutely hilarious. While I always thought that sitcoms were just full of overly used jokes and cardboard characters, How I Met Your Mother was not only funny and fresh, but felt like it had more depth than the typical sitcom. I was hooked.

How I Met Your Mother has a unique storytelling style that continues into season four. The overarching story is being told by an older Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) to his children. The series consists of a series of flashbacks from Ted's 20s and 30s about the lives of himself and his friends living in New York City and, ultimately, how he met his future wife. This frame may seem complex, especially if you haven't tuned in from the beginning, but it's done in a breezy, comfortable manner that feels natural and doesn't confuse viewers. I felt like it was a story that my father could have been telling me because sometimes there are flashbacks within the overarching flashback and scenes and timing are not perfectly linear, which is more like how a person would share memories -- as they are triggered by something else, rather than chronologically.

In season four, the gang continues to mature as they enter their 30s. Ted successfully proposes to Stella (Sarah Chalke), but is left at the altar. Ted fights to come to terms with it, and later reenters the dating scene after becoming roommates with ex-girlfriend Robin (Cobie Smulders). Ted is later laid off from his job, and he decides to begin his own architecture firm. Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) struggles with growing feelings for Robin. While Barney continues his usual womanizing ways, tension grows between him and Robin as Barney's feelings start to come out. Meanwhile, Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) move into their new apartment and struggle with whether or not they're ready to have children. Each character's world changes throughout the series, building up for more antics in season five.

The cast of How I Met Your Mother does a perfect job of playing off one another, making the jokes and punch lines feel snappy and well-utilized. While many comedies run the risk of overdoing jokes, How I Met Your Mother does a fantastic job of balancing the joke surrounding an episode with all of the characters. By far, the best (and most hilarious) character in this show is the awe-(wait for it...)-some Barney Stinson with his unnamed corporate job, endless supply of suits, and constant bedding of various women. Barney is always up to something off-the-wall and funny, no matter what's happening in the lives of the other characters.

The season four DVD set includes all 24 episode on three discs in widescreen format with English 5.1 Dolby Surround sound plus English, French, and Spanish subtitles -- not to mention a great selection of bonus features. These features include a recap of season three, episode commentaries, a gag reel, "A Night with Your Mother" special featuring an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences panel discussion, a hilarious gag video about how awesome Barney is, and an extended scene from "The Fight."

Season four is another great chapter in the How I Met Your Mother saga. The series is just as humorous as when it first began, and the characters continue to be interesting and funny. The amazing thing for me about this series is how it can cover such a range of emotions in just one episode. I don't usually respond to TV or movies emotionally, but How I Met Your Mother can make me roll around laughing and takes me to the brink of tears in the same episode. I can't wait for the new season to start.

How I Met Your Mother in Season Four is just as good as the first three seasons with some really interesting and funny episodes

A major part of the season deals with Ted and Stella's relationship after they get engaged. Ted has a problem when Stella wants him to move to New Jersey and the gang tries to talk him out of moving. As the wedding draws near Ted tells Stella that he invited Robin and Stella gets mad because she does not want a significant ex to be at the wedding so Ted invites Tony, Stella's ex. This turns out to be not a good idea as it turns out that Stella gets back with Tony.

Barney deals with his feelings for Robin in Season 4. He is jealous at Ted because after coming back from Japan Robin lives with Ted for a while. While living with him they become friends wit benefits so that their bad habits wont get on each others nerves.

Barney helps Robin though by making her a great audition tape that gets her a job as an anchor for a 4 am show. He also helps Marshall get a job as in house council at GNC (the bank he works for.)

Marshall and Lilly are debating on wither or not they should have a baby.

Near the end of the season Ted runs into Stella and Tony who help him find a job. During this time Tony breaks up with Stella, but eventually work things out. Tony and Stella and move to California where a few years after Tony writes a screen play about the triangle that gets made into a popular movie. Tony also helps Ted get a job as a professor at the local university and the season ends with Ted telling his kids that their mom was in his class.

I thought this movie was going to be alot better. I watched, and I thought after 30 mins that this movie lacked substance and quality. I was wondering is it going to get better, but even into it for an hour still was disappointed. I saw it because of the two amazing lead roles, and it looked like a great movie. The two lead roles were not enough to make this film worthwhile, and I think they are both very talented. It wasn't them at all. It was just a poor kind of film that shouldn't have been made or if made been written alot better! Im so glad I didn't waste my 7 dollars to see it at the show. It wasn't worth it!

Matthew McConaughey, can be seen in a string of run of the mill formula romance comedies. On the surface this looks like another lightweight comedy under his belt.

Here Matthew McConaughey who plays a bachelor, Connor Mead, dedicated to his craft, as his brother(Breckin Meyer) is about to commit the unthinkable "marriage". When he gets there he is confronted by his ghost of his long dead Uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas who pretty much plays himself). In the tradition of "A Christmas Carol" he will meet three ghosts of girlfriends or potential girlfriends. They will try to show where he went wrong in life. Will he fall for this? Jennifer Garner plays his on-again off again lifelong love. Will she fall for the supposedly reformed Connor?

It is the one liner's and the tasty wedding treats that will keep you involved.

I bought the movie based on others with Matthew McConaughey which I truly loved - "Fairlure to Launch", "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days", "Fools Gold" and "Sahara". Stick with the others and avoid this - unless you're just renting, because it isn't worth a second viewing.

"Quite impressed once again" 2009-10-03

Quality of the Blu-rays is stellar. Some say First Contact has the best transfer; I disagree. The outdoor scenes on Insurrection are simply breathtatking at times, especially when there are closeups of the crew and the Baku. I only really had three negatives to note here.

One, the lack of Dolby Digital 5.1 in English. It's TrueHD, which isn't a bad thing, but not everyone has a receiver that supports TrueHD yet. You'll get basic surround from the PCM but it's not the same. The other languages have 5.1, and they say they're Dolby Digital, but according to my receiver they are TrueHD as well. Never once did I get any sort of digital signal; this using a PS3 with Bitstream enabled.

Second, the darker scenes had some artifacting going on with HDMI 1080p. Compared to something like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which is almost completely dark, this is a letdown of sorts. First Contact and Nemesis are the darker of the set and it really shows out on those movies.

Third, and this may not be a dealbreaker for you ( I don't want to hear any comments about this, it's all preference people )...the widescreen mat is not true 16:9; it does not properly fill widescreen displays, so you'll have black bars on the top and the bottom of the screen. They're not nearly as deep as their DVD counterparts, but it's still somewhat bothersome. I know some keep saying stuff like "That's true theatrical!!" and that's fine. But I'm not in a theater, my TV screen has more real estate, use it by formatting to true 16:9 for home displays. For the record this is a Samsung HL61A750 61-Inch 1080p LED Powered DLP HDTV, as big as they come, and it still doesn't fit properly.

Mind you, none of these should be dealbreakers. Just keep them in mind so you know what your setup really needs to look like in order to truly enjoy the package. Amazon's price smokes all others, so if you get it, get it from here.

I have both this set and the set from the first six movies. The audio and video are great, but the extras included in the set are not as good as the ones in the original cast's movie collection. They felt as if they were conceptually rushed and perhaps some more thought could have been given to the extras to make the set more of a "must have".

I am a Star Trek fan. Not a fantatic, but a fan. I've seen pretty much all the episodes from the original series through Voyager. Wasn't a big fan of Enterprise or even Voyager for that matter. This box set contains all four of the Trek films that starred Captain Picard and co. from the Next Generation series. Now I really like the Next Generation series. Being in my 30's I saw the original series in re runs before the Next Generation went on air but this was gang that I grew up with. I saw all the films in this box set at least once in the theater and in some cases, twice. Now that you know where I'm coming from, onto the movies. Since most of you that are looking at this set have probably seen these films before I'll focus mostly on the Blu Ray picture and audio quality. All movies were watched on a 50" Panasonic Plasma with a Definitive Technology surround sound system.

Star Trek Generations

The one that passed the torch from Capt. Kirk and co. to Picard's crew. First, I'll state that I don't think the Blu-Ray video transfers of the original six movies are as bad as what some reviewers were saying. Yes, they're is a lot of DNR (digital noise reduction) and some of the colors push "red" a little too much but they're a big step up from the DVD's. Genrations pretty much continues along the same lines with a video transfer that has a lot of DNR and "rosey" skin tones but is so much sharper and vibrant than the DVD (which I also owned). The blackness of space and the stars have a much improved quality over the DVD. They're some stand out scenes like the one with La Forge and Data talking about the emotion chip in Data's quarters. This scene really pops with shadow detail and some really sharp facial features. The 5.1 Dolby True HD soundtrack really packs a wallop. The opening rescue scene involving the Enterprise B and the Nexus gives the sub and surrounds a good workout. As does the battle with the Klingons and the crash sequence on the planet. All in all a minor step up from some of the Blu-Ray transfers (not Wrath of Kahn) on the original crew's box set.

Star Trek First Contact

Picard vs. The Borg in big budget, big screen style. DNR and a little too much red push are still evident in this transfer but, once again, a big step up from the DVD. The ships are really sharp and the colors do pop at times. Blacks are solid with no more muddy shadows like the DVD. Not quite as much bass punch as Generations but the surrounds are being engaged much more often. To be honest I don't remember this film having a whole lot of bass when I saw it in the theater so I won't fault the Blu-Ray. Without question an improvement over Generations. Not just in picture and audio quality but as a film too.

Star Trek Insurrection

Picard vs. Salieri from Amadeus. Just kidding. Really F. Murray Abraham does a good job here as the villain but this one really is not one of my favorites. Next to Final Frontier it's my least. I can think of many double episodes from the Next Generation TV series that were far superior to this film. Nonetheless, the picture and audio quality are quite good. I can see some black speckles here and there but nothing destracting. Still got DNR throughout the movie and I think some of the special effects are not that "special" with some weak CGI for the "collector" ship at the end of the film. Not awful but hi def just makes it more apparent. Audio is pretty good with decent bass here and there. I did notice some strain in the actor's vocal recordings now and then that would lead to clipping.

Star Trek Nemesis

Picard takes on a younger clone of himself. This is the most underated of all the Trek movies. Yes, there are some corny jokes now and then but nothing as bad as Data's learning of emotion in Generations. I wasn't crazy about the clone idea but I did like the larger, more politically oriented story like Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. Nemesis definetely has the best video and audio of all the four here. The picture is very natural looking and has a nice layer of film grain throughout. Skin tones look much more "real" than they did in the other films. Outer space still looks great and the ships have a sharp defined look to them. The audio really kicks butt. Starship flyby's feature some real bass and the ship battles get everything involved. Now I do run four subs (Two seperate and two in the towers) but I really didn't expect this much bass from this movie. Really, the bass is very "assaultive" which is the best word I could think of.

Well, these are my opinions which are certainly open for dispute but I think that this set is definetely worth the upgrade over the DVD's if you like the movies. Especially for the price that amazon.com is offering it at.

"Worth the purchase but missing the 'WOW' factor" 2009-09-28

After being amazed by what the blu-ray release did for the original six 'Trek' films I really had high hopes for this set. I figured since these Next Generation movies were newer, the prints (one would think) would be in better condition and that these fims should surpass the quality of the original six. However, this turned out to be an unreal expectation...perhaps I went into these with expectations too high.

First off, the packaging is again similar to the first six-movie set...it's just a different color with a different (but still nice) logo design on the front. The box set itself is very nice and is a wonderful compliment to the other. This set also contains the slim cases for each film with photos of the crew on the label covers. As with the first set, there is a 'Trek 2009' preview on each disc but I was able to skip through this with the 'forward' button used to skip chapters. The film menus on this set match those of the first so I was happy to see continuity with the packaging and menus from set to set.

As for the visual quality of the films, 'Generations', 'First Contact' and 'Insurrection' are all pretty similar and do not show enough difference between any of them to write specifics for each one. Slightly these three films get better with each one as the age of them decreases. On one hand it is nice that these three films are pretty consistant in quality, it is a shame the quality was not better. The prints seem to be in excellent condition and relatively clean and there is no argument that every film in this collection is a step up from DVD which makes it alone worth the purchase; the detail is better, the picture is clearer and the sound is better. However, as soon as the opening sequence for 'Generations' was over and live action began, I kept waiting for the 'wow' factor and it never came-not even by the end of 'Insurrection'. Of course I had the initial 'this looks nice' feeling from seeing a detailed shot with good colors, but the picture just didn't have the vibrancy and life that I expected. 'Flat' is about the best thing I can think of to describe these first three films in the set visually. It was a clean picture but I expected something cleaner. It was a detailed picture but I expected more detail. I just didn't get that true, life-like quality I was hoping to see. In my opinion/observation, the impression I get is that the films went through one too many filters in an attempt to get a clear, grain-free image while losing that small amount of detail that really makes a good disc look true to life. Perhaps my enthusiasm with how much of an upgrade I saw in the older six movies made me expect more than I thought I would get. While I can't point to any one specific flaw, the overall picture just had no 'wow' to it.

However, 'Nemesis' finally gave a much better look at what I was hoping the whole set would be like. Perpaps because it was the newest of the four it naturally was the best looking; it was the one film that actually seemed to have some life to the picture. It just had a little extra of everything-detail, clarity, crispness, etc. It didn't knock me over like some blu rays have but if the whole set had been as good as this film looked I could have gone to a five-star rating compared to the DVDs I have watched these on.

As for sound, I was again perhaps spoiled at the upgrade in the original set because I just didn't get the 'wow' factor here either. Again, no argument that it is an upgrade from the DVDs, but just not as good as I expected. While the audio is very clear and clean sounding, it just doesn't have that extra spark to it. When it came to action scenes, warp effects or explosions, I just didn't get that extra punch I expected in sound. It was as if the entire sound range was TOO balanced.

I'd give this set a three and a half if I could but when having to choose a three or four I give it a four. The upgrade in picture and audio from DVD is obvious and makes this worth a purchase at under $50. In the end, I get the feeling that since these films were newer there was less work to be done but this translated into a lazy approach and less time spent on the transfer of these films. Buyers will be happy as long as they don't expect reference material, a big 'wow' factor and don't expect as big as a leap in quality in this set as there was from the first six films going to blu.

"nice collection to the tng years/movies" 2009-09-28

This collection contains the 4 "Next Generation" movies, and a host of special features. Overall the TNG movies were more uneven than the TOS movies, mainly (IMO) because the TNG movies didn't have as good scripts as the TOS movies. Generations had a lot of good stuff, but they tried to do too much. First Contact, the best of all of them, is probably tied for the best movie of the entire franchise. Insurrection was actually quite excellent, but could have been a two-parter of the series. In fact, Insurrection was a wonderful story and very well done, but for a big screen production, it did not have the punch of other movies. Nemesis was a good movie, hobbled by bad pacing and a bad-guy that had incoherent motivation.

The special effects in all movies still look very compelling today. These movies are worth the upgrade to Blu-Ray, and the special features are also worth it. The commentary by Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis is worth the price of the set. It's one of the only commentaries I've ever listened to, completely, on DVD.

I love this show. I love the banter, I love the characters, and I even love the plots. This one is must-see TV for me, and I think I've already watched and re-watched the eps on DVR so often I can recite bits of dialogue from memory.

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are fantastic together. Lots of chemistry between them. And I wish I had a daughter like Alexis. Susan Sullivan is always wonderful.

In addition, they get New York RIGHT. So few shows do, like CSI:NY having a cabbie offer a woman a cigarette when New Yorkers know that it's been illegal to smoke in a cab for at least twenty years. They even know what a rent-controlled apartment is!

I can't wait for the rest of the new season, and I hope they get the DVDs for next season out as quickly as they did these!

"Nathan Is Castle" 2009-09-30

Nathan knows how to be the character, because he goes in depth to investigate, etc. to 'envelope' this character. He also knows how to make it fun. Most actors try to make things too serious in places and areas that's not that bad. Nathan makes it enjoyable, but serious only when needed. My family and I enjoy watching this show every time it comes on and we haven't missed a beat of the shows, because we might not catch what the next show is about. It keeps a good main story line going between the main characters and a good story per show as well.

The first disc features an audio commentary on "Flowers for Your Grave" by creator/executive producer Andrew Marlowe, executive producer Rob Bowman, and actors Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, and Jon Huertas. The book launch sequences were actually shot on location in New York City as part of a presentation before the show was picked up. Marlowe talks about the challenge of introducing all the regular characters while also telling a mystery story. Marlowe and Bowman talk about casting Fillion and Katic. Meanwhile, Fillion cracks jokes and is his usual entertaining self.

The second disc includes a commentary on "A Chill Goes Through Her Veins" by Marlowe, Bowman, Fillion, Katic, Huertas and Molly Quinn. They talk about the challenge of filming on an actual construction site. Marlowe and Fillion talk about their approach to the character of Castle. Katic goes into detail about her character's backstory and how it informs what she does.

Disc three starts off with two commentaries on "A Death in the Family." The first one features Marlowe, Bowman, Fillion, Katic, Huertas, and Quinn. Everyone banters back and forth while sharing anecdotes about shooting this episode. Katic talks about the dramatic material in this episode and how it changes the relationship between Castle and Beckett.

There is also another commentary for this episode by Huertas and fellow cast member Seamus Dever. These guys crack jokes and praise the episode's guest stars. They also tell all sorts of filming anecdotes.

"Whodunit: The Genesis of Castle" features Andrew Marlowe talking about the origins of the show - a desire to hearken back to shows like The Rockford Files - Season One and Moonlighting - Seasons 1 & 2. Fillion, Katic and the other regular cast members talk about their characters.

"Castle's Godfather" is an interview between Marlowe, Bowman and T.V. producer/writer and legend Stephen J. Cannell. Bowman knew Cannell when he was a kid and got his start on T.V. working for him. The two men share entertaining anecdotes about some of the shows they've worked on together.

"Write-Along with Nathan Fillion" is a hilarious mock-featurette as the actor spends the day with Cannell. The actor shows up to the man's house late and is forced to camp out until the next day. Fillion hangs on Cannell's every word but seems more impressed by the T.V. mogul's numerous classic cars. This is a fun extra as these two guys play well off each other. Give these guys their own show!

Finally, there is "Misdemeanors: Bloopers and Outtakes" which is an amusing montage of the cast goofing around and blowing their lines with Fillion getting the lion's share of the laughs.

Witty, suspenseful and fresh! The first season of "CASTLE" is the modern "Moonlighting" featuring a cool cast and each episode with an entertaining storyline.

"CASTLE" debuted on ABC as a mid-season replacement and began airing on March 2009. Created by Andrew M. Marlowe ("Air Force One", "End of Days" and "Hollyw Man") and executive produced by Rob Bowman ("The A-Team", "The X-Files", "Day Break") comes a new drama series on crime solving.

The first season which featured 10 episodes stars actor Nathan Fillion ("Firefly", "Drive" and "Desperate Housewives") as Richard Castle. The famous mystery novelist who is adored by many but behind-the-scenes, he is a playboy who has an on-and-off fling with his ex-wife (who is an actress), another ex-wife who is his publisher and lives with his bright teenage daughter Alexis (Molly Quinn, "My One and Only") and his meddlesome mother and former Broadway actress, Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan, "The Nine", "Dharma & Greg").

There is a lot of pressure on Nathan to create another book and with him stuck, his luck starts to change when he meets by-the-book Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic, "Heroes", "The Spirit", "Quantum of Solace") who is investigating several murders which have taken place and the way that they were done were like the murders featured in several of his novels. Because of his knowledge of how things end up with his books, he gets the opportunity to assist the detectives in their case.

Eventually, Richard Castle discovers that he can do several things in his life. Write his new book based on Detective Beckett, see if he can woo Detective Beckett and most of all to investigate other murders which he can incorporate ideas for his new book. At first, it seems implausible but with Castle being so well-known and friends with the mayor, Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Huds0n) will do what he can to make the mayor and his boss happy, so he allows Richard to tag along with Detective Beckett.

Needless to say, she's not happy about it but with his skills of mystery writing and her skills as a detective, the two find out that together, they can be an effective duo in crime solving. Also, joining Beckett are Detective Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas), Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and forensics doctor Dr. Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones).

The drama series is quite slick as it gives you the feel of New York and like many abc studios related DVD releases, Disney has always done a good job with their TV show transfers. A show that balances outdoor and indoor shots with good lighting, the picture quality for "CASTLE" is pretty solid. I didn't see any major artifacting issues or low level noise that was distracting.

As for the audio, the series is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The series is front and center channel driven with a few episodes (that involve gun fights) utilizing the surround channels. The series does utilize quite a bit of music and for the most, the series is understandable and clear.

Subtitles are in English SDH, French and Spanish.

JUDGMENT CALL:

"CASTLE" was definitely a surprise. I can remember seeing the commercials during "LOST" but and for the most part, it kind of reminded me of the old "Moonlighting" years of crime investigation. But after watching the first episode, I was instantly hooked.

Both Rick Castle and Detective Kate Beckett are just polar opposites but you know that there is this sexual attraction there that makes their chemistry work onscreen. In a way, both are like Bruce Wayne (Batman) in the way they are keen in investigating things. Castle, as a mystery writer and having done a lot of research, puts himself in the shoes of the criminal and thinks of the many possibilities that can exist between the characters. Detective Beckett, almost having a similar tragic Bruce Wayne story is a by-the-book detective and for the most part, have their unique way of feeding off each other in terms of handling a case. But Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic do a great job and have good chemistry onscreen.

So, far every episode has been intriguing, suspenseful and entertaining. If there was one thing that tends to creep in my head that is more on the negative side, is just the serious aspects of a popular writer getting the opportunity to tag along a detective on her various cases. I just have a hard time seeing the NYPD allowing such a thing and allowing a writer to get that close to the detectives.

Granted, this may seem a bit farfetched but overall, the writers make it work. Each of the characters are actually quite enjoyable to watch, especially Castle's meddling mother Martha and logical and intelligent daughter Alexis, it's good to see Castle pulled out of his element once in awhile. Beckett's partners Detective Esposito and Ryan lend that serious but also comedic moment for the series.

The first season of "CASTLE" has been quite enjoyable thus far. I'm glad to hear that the series has been green lighted for a second season because "CASTLE" has been nothing but entertaining, fun and a suspenseful drama series thus far.

Characters are well presented and the animal-human connection is so well presented it is believable. It's probably the best PIXAR movie I have seen so far, save the Incredibles. Considering I paid about $40 for the 2 disc DVD set of BUgs life 3 or 4 years ago, I think $28 for 2 Disc BLu-ray, + the DVD, + the digital copy is a pretty good value.

I am a bit annoyed at being forced to pay for the extra digial copy and then having DIsney telling me that it is worth $20. Come on, the digital copy is worth $1-$2 more at best to most people.

I do enjoy Blu-ray. I also enjoy DVD. I NEVER use a digital copy, as I don't have an I-anything and the idea of watching a high def on a screen smaller than 32 inches makes no sense to me. When I first saw this, I thought the description of his package being a four disc edition was a typo.

I LOVE the idea of packaging a Blu-ray and a regular DVD together in the same package, since I don't have Blu-ray in every room of my house and would like to watch a movie in a room other than the one my home entertainment system is in and I've been forced to buy two copies of the same movie to do so. HD DVD had the right idea by putting one of each on the two sides of the disc, but I'll take a separate DVD copy instead.

What I'm annoyed about is the practice of putting the extras on a separate disc, since one of the ideas behind Blu-ray was to put out a disc that could hold roughly three times the information a DVD could, so I find putting extras on a separate disc is nothing more than an excuse to jack the price up, as is the digital copy.

Since this is the way it is (and it's not confined to Disney, by the way), I will have to buy the four disc set because the three disc set is only offering the movie, extras, and the useless digital copy. I don't like it, but I love this movie and I love Pixar, so I'm willing to pay for it. I don't like it, but since I don't have a choice, there you go.

This is a review about the type of package you get with the Bluray. First to those who are complaining about the price... if you think that this pack is really going to sell for more than $30 on release day, you are a poor shopper. Target, Walmart and others will have a special first week discount just like they did with the Bolt Bluray/Dvd combo pack and Amazon will most likely discount it to be competitive as well. Second I think the appearance of Blurays bundled with Dvds is the best thing ever! Here is why: I am a childless adult and I love animated movies like Wall-e, Bolt, Ice Age but let's face it--they are KIDS MOVIES. MOST KIDS DO NOT HAVE A BLURAY PLAYER IN THEIR ROOM. As such, the largest audience for these movies is not going to find much use in a Bluray unless the whole family watches it in their home's entertainment center. Most parents will not buy a Bluray and instead buy a Dvd due to price and its usability as I just described. Junior is not going to drag the Bluray into his room only to find out it does not play on his Dvd player and then leave the disc it on the floor among his toys like all the other Dvds he has collected; at least that's what parents don't want so they don't buy the Bluray. So this package is ingenious because it solves this problem and you get every possible format. I bet many would not have otherwise bought the Bluray if it did not have this Dvd addition. I wish all Blurays were packaged like this because I am always willing to pay $5-10 more than that special multi-disc Dvd edition to get this! Are you film companies listening?

Don't listen to anyone who gave this movie a under 4 star review. They clearly have not seen enough movies to know what a bad movie is. Anyway, this movie was really funny. A person in a great deep depression would end up laughing and being happy by the end. I loved bob, The American president and everyone else. The voice overs were good and everything was as real as it could get. This movie is for people of all ages.

I give this an "average" review. This was very plain and not even something that I can show my kids do to some of the content.

I'm very disappointed with the main story line but I did like the alternate story line of B.O.B.'s big break.

That will be something that I can show my kids. I think that this was a setup for a Saturday morning cartoon lineup. Just like the penguins did.

I don't fault Dreamworks one bit about wanting to make a buck, but this was really a straight to DVD sort of production.

It seemed very edited and cut-up with a loss of continuity of both character and the story line.

Go rent it or pick it up at your local library. I wouldn't spend the money if I had it to do over again.

Monsters VS Aliens is pretty much what I expected. An expensive, explosion filled animated movie. As with all American mage animated films, there are the obligatory inside jokes for adults and a moral about "following your heart" and female empowerment (that's been a compulsory theme ever since "The Little Mermaid" was in theatres). Things do blow up real good, and kids will appreciate all the colors and moving stuff but the movie has no real heart. Nothing in this film really engaged me.

Then there are these other subtle themes that you can derive from this film. Its interesting that people will accept a cockroach scientist, a 60 foot tall woman and aliens in a movie, but a non-secretive, competent, effective government is way too fantastic. Another trend in films like this, all the men in the movie are crazy, weak, cowardly or selfish - great role models for boys.

In general, Monsters Vs Aliens is a so-so movie, not very memorable. If you want to see an animated film this year with more heart and brains, then go rent/buy Coraline instead.

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS is a cute, light, family film. Much cuter and much better than I expected. My entire family - husband, 12 year old daughter, 4 year old daughter, and me - all found something to enjoy in this film. And I started laughing out loud when the 4 year old started explaining the movie to me as we watched. What a hoot!

The plot of MONSTERS VS. ALIENS is pretty basic: America has been capturing and holding monsters in an ultra super secret government facility for decades. Aliens land with intent to destroy the Earth. The military sets loose the monsters, who are all pretty genial folks, to attack the aliens and defend the Earth. Along the way, lessons are learned about overcoming obstacles and being happy with who you are.

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS is a cross between every 1950s B monster movie you can think of (The Blob, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Mothra, The Fly), Star Wars, Independence Day, Dr. Strangelove, and a host of others. The plot is not original, but it is entertaining and fun. The voice talent is excellent, and the computer animation is outstanding.

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS is a surprisingly pleasant, kid-safe movie that adults will also like. No bad language, no sex, no real violence. Just humor, fun, and good messages. Perfect for a family night outing. RECOMMENDED.

I agree with most of the reviews on here about this being a great Blu-Ray release. There is only one thing that annoys me, it's the fact that this is presented in 4:3 instead of 16:9. Every TV being sold today is HD and widescreen. Why would anyone put out a 4:3 Blu-Ray is beyond me since Blu-Ray is an HD format and all recent HDTV's are 16:9. No one still watching a standard definition TV will get any benefit from Blu-Ray! This release would receive 5 stars if the movie were presented in wide screen.

If you can get this four disc blu-ray set at the right price, its worth it for the collectors watch alone if you collect this kind of stuff. The blu-ray pressing is wonderful. 30 years ago I was lucky enough to own a original IB technicolor 16mm print of this film and I can honestly say the blu-ray is as sharp or even sharper and the colors as vivid as the print I owned. The extras are a mixed bag of older stuff that has been presented before in other formats along with some new stuff. And Warner Brothers should be ashamed to have put such a bad copy of the john ritter television production of The Dreamer of OZ for people to see. I have a vhs copy of this I made off the original tv broadcast almost 19 years ago that looks better. For those interested the disc (non blu-ray) of When the Lion Roars is a treat if your a fan of MGM movie history. Overall a nice set with all of the extras. Can't wait to see what they come up with for the 80th anniversary set. And you know they will!!

THE WIZARD OF OZ, MGM's classic film from 1939, has become iconic in American cinema over the seventy years since its initial release and ranks as one of the most watched films of all times. Based on the novels by L. Many varying accounts exist of how the Singer Midgets who portrayed the Munchkins were out of control during the production, drinking and gambling on the studio lot, but for Pellegrini, there was a much different atmosphere on the set. As Pellegrini recalls, "Working conditions were great. MGM always found nice places for us to eat and sleep. We were like one big family. Judy Garland would sit around with us little ones on the yellow brick road and talk to us. One Christmas, Judy got us all one huge box of candy and autographed pictures. I still have my picture. It says, `To Li'l Alabam (that was my nickname), Best wishes, Judy Garland.'"

The fact is, THE WIZARD OF OZ is a film that simply brings people together. Watching it today has the ability to transport someone back to their childhood or to instantly remember specific times in their life. I can vividly recall watching the movie on television with my family when I was very young and have incredibly fond memories of seeing it for the first time on the big screen during one of its re-releases with a great group of friends when I was an adult. THE WIZARD OF OZ allows one to lose themselves in its fantastical world for a couple of hours, and no matter what their age, feel young at heart all over once again. It is a film to be shared, bridging one generation to the next, creating and perpetuating an extended family of the film's enthusiasts that continues to grow seventy years later. Included along with the movie is a staggering sixteen hours of bonus footage including four hours that have never been seen before. The inclusion of the original silent films of the saga on Disc Two are fantastic, complete with all of the original scratches and jump cuts, but unfortunately the 1990 movie starring John Ritter that is also found on the disc is blurry, rendering it almost unwatchable. This however is the only drawback to the release.

It looks like it was copied off an old vhs tape. Cmon, Warner! The original press release mentioned it would be remastered for the occasion. No such luck. Are there plans to release it on a special Dvd?

This movie is the prime example why to own Blu Ray. It is absolutely breath taking. The way they have redone the film makes you see details you have never seen before. Nothing makes it awkward or seem unreal. It is beautiful. If you have never seen this movie or die hard fans you fall in love this film over and over again. It is so beautifully redone and touched up that you will be left wanting more.

Charlaine Harris created an amazing world in her Southern Vampire book series, and the essence of it has been projected just about perfectly to the screen.

Alan Ball's vision of Harris' world has resulted in possibly the most atmospheric show to ever hit the screens.

Oh, there are faults aplenty, and the casting of Anna Paquin as the leading character Sookie Stackhouse is a long way from the heroine of the books, but overall there is so much good about this bizarre fantasy world where vampires are trying to join mainstream society that it is easily forgiven.

Watching True Blood is - in true HBO style - like watching cinema on the screen. There is as much to appreciate about the production values and the attention to detail as there is about the acting and the story.

Unfortunately the second season did not live up to the promise of the first. While there are some continuing storylines, season one can be watched and appreciated on its own; the serial killer mystery wrapping itself up in the final episode. After that, stick to the wonderful books.

I went to whatch the movie last week... as I said before about the first one, I can tell you too that this one is so great. I love it. The second Tinkerbell movie is so great, full of color, and a lot of friendship. This movie is recomended to all family, kids will love it and It has not things that people feel uncorfontable. The second Tinkerbell movie is about herself and how she deals with frienship. It is so magical because you can see how fairies work in order to produce pixie dust, specialy the blue one that is too hard to get it. Thinker has a very importat mission in this movie, and for that reason she has a lot of work to do before a special event. His best friend that you all ready know, is really a very good friend who stands with her all the time that she needs him. Songs are ok, video is full of color and a lot of new scenes of the neverland island. No humans in this one, but some sort of pirates story. Two best friends trols and a little cute bug are new in the movie. The rest of the fairies like Vidia has not an important role in this movie, however you can see them work very hard too. Silver has an importat job with the baby frogs, rosetta has a new autom dress, vidia has a lot of work with the fall, and everything in this movie is gold and red color because is during the fall that happen the most important part. Thinker and his best friend learn to work together and to forgive if there is something wrong. What I can say is that the movie makes me feel so good because you can learn that no matter what happen with your relationships, you can put your proud into a box and give the first step in order to ask for help. The blu-ray release is coming soon, but for some reason here in Mexico is in theathers, so if you have come, do not forget to whatch it, you won't disapoint it. Oh, I almost forgot that you can see new Thinker's inventions that help her to travel to secret places never be seen before.

I didnt start watching Mad Men until this summer. I started with the second season and found that it was pretty easy to put together some of the storylines. The first season is a must watch though and really has some of the best acting on television. Visually the show surpasses anything else. It's really a show HBO or Showtime worthy. Why both those big networks passed up on it is insane. AMC really hit a homerun getting this show. Creater and Executive Producer Matthew Weiner has taking some of the best directors and writers from when he was working on The Sopranos and if anybody has seen all seven seasons then you can see the similarities of Mad Men to The Sopranos. Don Draper IS the Tony Soprano of the 1960's just in advertising not organized crime. Season 3 has started up and has revealed some but this show seems to have so many layers its like an onion. The dvd box sets are worth watching over and over and thats why i bought both.

Dare I say, better than the original 3 movies of X-Men? At least for me it is as good, if not more interesting. The only thing I felt was that some of the "Effects" were a little cheaply done by today's standards. Such as his claws once he gets them replaced with adamantium. They were to shiny and to make it more realistic, they could've had more reflection in them. They were too perfect.

The story was very good. Telling the origins of how he grew up as a mutant and well I won't spoil much, but how him and Beast were both involved in each other's lives. Very cool. So in reality, we saw the origins of both Beast and Wolverine. Sooo coool. There are even appearances of characters that are in the original X-men.

This movie delivers full on action. I recommend this movie to be part of any super hero library.

The quality of the Blue Ray is just AMAZING!! Every frame is stunningly presented and the sound was fantastic as well. Great quality, great movie.

We got this movie even with all the mixed reviews because word of mouth among our real life friends said it was a good movie. While it has its faults, there is a lot to love about the movie.

The good. The main characters all do an excellent job. Especially Jackman since he real life voice and demeanor do not even come close to Logan. Sabertooth also does a great job in his acting for the script he was given. You get a real sense that even though he is at odds with his brother, he cares about him more than anything else.... after all according to the movie plot, they have been together for about 150 years.

They do a good job explaining how he got the metal in him and the claws as well as his memory loss even though I personally did not like that part of it.

The graphics and effects were great too. On blu ray especially it looked so good.

The bad. The movie moved along way to fast. You get a small glimpse of the brothers going through wars and stuff up till the present day but largely ignore that back story. Then they join a special group of others like them and again we get fast forward through their time together and a very brief introduction to the other specials. He leaves during what appears to be his first mission and somehow everyone is upset and that breaks up the group even though he was new and never did anything for them at least as the movie shows. He goes and tries to start a normal life and of course that can not happen. Again this was all so rushed, it should have been its own movie and spent the time to develop these characters better and their relationships.

Also far too many characters die and for no reason it seems. Now in the first Xmen I had an issue with the fact that they were so light on killing and they needed some low level mutants as fodder but this movie just wastes good established (from the comic books) characters.

Of course as many others pointed out this movie strays far from the comics but so do the Xmen movies. I can not really fault that here as they try to stay more in line with the other films than with the comics. Personally I can accept this as an alternate version of the Xmen world and am ok with that.

Overall we still enjoyed the movie but were disappointed at how far short they fell with what they could have done. I imagine that in 10 years or so somebody will pick up Xmen again and perhaps do the series right. Good movie but not great.

I originally downloaded this while it was in theaters like many. I skimmed through it and I was concerned. I never got around to watching it and decided to wait for the Blu Ray to watch it right - with all special effects in tact.

AllI even read on Amazon or other places is how bad X-Men 3 was. X-Men 3 was good to me. Those same people say that this film was bad. I was expecting a horrible movie, but instead this movie turned out to be hot!! So don't listen to the haters. These are the same people who complain about every little thing. We already know that Hollywood changes commic book movies around, so why get mad? They may not have played it by the book, but at least we did get to see things that reminded me of the comic, like Wolverine's sheep lined jacket and the cigar!

Like X-Men 3, we get a chance to see characters we probably would not have seen otherwise. Like Deadpool, Emma Frost (I hopt they do the Hellfire Club...), Gambit and others. Speaking of which, I never liked Gambit, but this film made me like him. I could never see why people liked him. I still don't see it, but at least like him on film!

My only complaint is that it is only an hour and forty minutes. However, the time seems longer as they did get everything they needed to into the film. FOr the haters, the movie is about WOlverine and his life, not super action, although that is there too. It is not about the other characters either. Be happy they put so many others into thefilm instead of just Wolverine and Sabertooth. Sbaertooth is another character I did not care for.

This movie is worthy to be in my collection and stand beside X2. In some ways it is better due to the fact that it came later. I thought it stupid to do an origins film, but I don't mind more. Just not in Cyclops.

"Brilliant, but..." 2009-09-27

Others have extolled the greatness of this set as well as I could have. Stated simply, Star Trek (Season 2) on Blu-ray is pure greatness. The picture is phenomenal. You should buy it. Now.

They have also taken full advantage of the new Mobile-Blu and BD Live features, but at an apparent cost. I have discovered that when I press stop (once) on my machine (JVC XV-BP1), with or w/out using the remote, and then restart it, it does NOT pick up where I left off, but rather goes right to the beginning of the disc and re-loads the menu, and I have to navigate back to the episode I was watching and then to the point in the episode where I left off. VERY irritating.

Additionally, the "zoom" feature on my player does not work with this set. The Season 1 Blu-ray set allowed for both zoom and stop memory. I use a standard TV with a terrific picture with my Blu-ray player (no bucks for LCD or Plasma... yet), so on the Season 1 set the zoom feature eliminated the letterboxing that is created on all four sides of the picture on my TV. Thus, I am forced to watch Season 2 episodes in a smaller picture size than Season 1 with black bars all the way around. I don't know if this or the lack of stop memory is a production flaw or something that had to be sacrificed for the Mobile-Blu and BD Live features, but whatever the cause, I am unhappy about it.

These are the only things wrong with an otherwise perfect set. I can't wait to see what it looks like on 1080p because on standard TV it looks fantastic!

By the way, Shatner Defender, I could not have said it better myself. Shatner is a terrific actor and it is sad that it is somehow hip these days to trash him. To the Shatner-Hater: You like "Buffy." If you think that's great acting, then I am certain that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Maybe I'd had given this release five enthusiastic stars -- if I could see them. These discs will not play on older Panosonic Blu-ray players and Blu-ray recorders. On mine it loads Paramount's promo, touting all their wonderful Blu-ray releases, but when you hit "Play Episode" the menu options vanish and nothing else happens.

I installed the latest firmware, but still nothing. You'd think with the hundreds of millions Paramount makes off "Star Trek" they might have paid some office clerk $10/hour to check the discs against all name-brand machines, but I guess they didn't want to be bothered. Whatever happened to Quality Control?

When I first got into, ahem, HD DVD, I was quite excited and impressed by Star Trek: The Original Series--Season 1. It looked and sounded fantastic, and the extra features were terrific. I was really looking forward to season 2 on HD DVD.

Three weeks later, HD DVD effectively dropped dead.

I eventually bought a Blu-ray player and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, almost two years later, Season 2 is out and so am I -- out of luck, that is. So much for pre-ordering. So much for expedited shipping. Money down the drain.

So now what? Wait two months for enough angry customers

Stunning, looks great! The only complaint is that because they redid the original effects (which for the most part I hate and don't watch) they decided that they sound not do ANYTHING to the original effects. So you go from a stunning picture with the actors to the effects shots which are full of scratches, dirt and dust very evident on the film. At least they could have cleaned that part up. Why not go all the way? In any event I still would rather see those then the remastered effects. Just a little grip but for the price you cant beat this set. I paid [...] bucks for a two episode DVD when they were first released so this is a real bargain AND in high def.

Star trek has been written about probably more than any show. From its countless pop culture references, to it examination of political and social commentaries, Star Trek has been talked about ad nauseam. Given the vast amount of writings, in some ways, its almost arrogant to try and add something new. However, if you're reading this, you're probably not as interested in a review of the series and episodes as much as you're interested in whether the Blu Ray is worth getting. I will say this new Blu-ray is something rather special. The picture is amazing, and I feel almost like I'm watching the show again for the first time, kind of like when you've heard a joke a hundred times, but then one day you hear it a little different and you laugh, like its new but familiar as well.

However, the trouble is that the Blu ray is almost too good. I can tell when the make up meshes with real skint. I can tell when a punch misses the target. In fact, the Blu Ray is so clear that you can actually see and clearly identify the stunt doubles as they are intermixed with the close up of kirk or whoever is fighting. So your interest in the Blu ray may vary. While the show's strengths in story and acting are highlighted, the weaknesses of the technology are made the more apparent. That being said, I love having the ability to watch both the new and old effects addition, as well as the slew of special features included makes this a must have for me.

The second season of Star Trek: one of television's most cherished programs of all time and the precursor to an additional five television series and eleven feature-length films arrives on Blu-ray with high expectations to meet or surpass the lofty standards set by the first season's incredible Blu-ray release. It should come as no surprise that season two picks up exactly where its predecessor left off, boasting a wonderful array of quality episodes presented with gorgeous 1080p transfers, full-fledged DTS-HD MA 7.1 lossless soundtracks, and plenty of bonus features.

Arguably the most important of any Star Trek season throughout the franchise's entire 29 season run, season two of the Original Series set the stage for a myriad of themes, story lines, and characters that would find their way into Star Trek lore in the 40 years after the season's original television debut on September 15, 1967.

Superficially, this season's most obvious contribution to "Star Trek" lore lies in the introduction of Pavel Chekov (portrayed by Walter Koenig) as a primary cast member. Arguably debuting too late in the series' run, his absence in the season one episode "Space Seed" but integral role in the history of Eugenics War villain Khan Noonien Singh as seen in the 1982 filmed sequel The Wrath of Khan represents one of Star Trek's most glaring inconsistencies, perhaps the only flaw to be found in my favorite Star Trek movie.

Season Two of Star Trek features what I think is the most loved episode of them all, "The Trouble With Tribbles." Featuring the franchise's best-known non-humanoid species, making for its funniest episode, and serving as the inspiration for the highly-innovative Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" that stands as one of that show's finest hours to be found outside the Dominan War story arc, "Tribbles" is simply Star Trek at its finest.

The Video Transfer

CBS gave the Blu-ray release a brand new video encode at 1080p, compressed with VC-1, with pillar boxing to preserve the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

Also what about those new digital special effects shots that have been such a hot topic? They have never looked better.

The great thing about these Blu-ray sets is the seamless branching, so you can choose which way you want to watch, with the original effects, or the new. Season two of Star Trek comes onto Blu-ray with an expectedly stellar 1080p, 1.33:1-framed transfer that preserves the series' original broadcast aspect ratio and places vertical black bars on either side of the image when replayed on a 16X9 screen.

Though it can a bit soft at times, seemingly a fault of the source and not the Blu-ray transfer, there's not a moment where this presentations fails to absolutely impress. It boasts a moderately heavy layer of grain throughout; effects shots as seen in the non-remastered versions are in particularly rough shape, though given the source material and the composition of the original effects, there's no need to fault the transfer and the rough-around-the-edges look lends a charm to the proceedings that's absent from the remastered versions.

Colors tend to jump off the screen with the natural appearance of every shade in the spectrum, highlighted by the mustard, red, and baby blue colors of the Starfleet uniforms. In addition, fine object detail is most impressive. Viewers will become privy to Spock's heavy make-up and the many beads of sweat that often appear on Dr. McCoy's face. A scar on Mirror Universe Sulu's face features an incredible amount of visible clarity and texture. Uniforms, too, are highly detailed; eagle-eyed viewers will see stitches, loose threads, a zipper that runs from the side of the neck and down, and even the faint residue of a Starfleet insignia patch that was removed on one particular red uniform in "Mirror, Mirror."

The clarity of the 1080p resolution even allows you to make out obvious stunt doubles in several long-distance action scenes. Blacks are generally solid but occasionally look a bit too bright, but flesh tones never veer too far from a natural shade. A small amount of shimmering and the occasional speckle of dirt are the only real hindrances to an otherwise stellar transfer.

Audio 10 out of 10

CBS has done an amazing job with the sound on the Blu-ray set. Audio is much harder to restore and squeeze extra clarity from as compared to film, so it is quite a testament to the technology we have today that these discs sound as good as they do. The audio is stored as DTS-HD Master Audio which is a lossless compression, which means this is as good as it will get and is available in 7.1 lossless soundtrack.

Just like Season One, the audio is clear, with dialogue well prioritized, it is never drowned out by other sound effects. Another well designed touch is the sense of ambiance mixed into the surround channels. When on the bridge you are engulfed in the sounds of ship.

However purists are again considered as CBS included the mono track as well. It can accessed by choosing Communications in the main menu and then selecting Audio Options.

The remastered blu-ray version also has a significantly greater sense of space and atmosphere. Listeners will often hear the hustle and bustle of the ship in the background as characters walk and talk about the bridge and Enterprise corridors, whether during calmer shots or more intense action sequences.

Extras

Each disc in this set contains bonus features, though some discs are far more feature-packed than others. Additionally, each episode is available for viewing with either original or enhanced special effects.

Disc One

Disc one begins with Starfleet Access in conjunction with the episode "Amok Time." This is a picture-in-picture feature that offers an extensive background on the episode via video commentary with various Star Trek crew members and historians. The piece also features pop-up trivia tidbits. Also included on this disc is Billy Blackburn's Treasure Chest , the second part of a collection of "rare home movies and special memories" as recorded on the set of Star Trek by the recurring background character.

Along with numerous clips from the show, Blackburn recalls his varied experiences on the set through many of the different episodes that populate season two. Rounding out the special features on disc one are previews for each episode on the disc and BD-Live and Mobile-Blu functionality.

Disc Two

Only previews for the episodes that appear on this disc and BD-Live and Mobile-Blu functionality are included on this disc.

Disc Three

As with disc two, disc three features only 480p previews for the episodes that appear on this disc and BD-Live and Mobile-Blu functionality.

Disc Four

Disc four is entirely devoted to Tribbles. "The Trouble With Tribbles" is the only original series episode to be found on the disc, and available with it is a feature-length commentary track with David Gerrold, writer of the famed episode. Also included is Starfleet Access, the picture-in-picture commentary/trivia track.

Perhaps the best feature on the disc is the inclusion of two additional Tribble-related episodes: "More Tribbles, More Troubles" from "Star Trek: The Animated Series," and "Trials and Tribble-ations" from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The former, featuring David Gerrold commentary, is presented in 1080p high definition with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio and a DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack. The episode runs for 24:13. The video and audio quality are fantastic and bode well for a possible future Blu-ray release of the entire series. Meanwhile, "Trials and Tribble-ations" features a 1080i, 1.33:1 aspect ratio that I feel is no better than the same episode's upscaled DVD counterpart. The episode does feature a DTS-HD MA 7.1 lossless soundtrack.

Trials and Tribble-ations: Uniting Two Legends takes viewers deep into the episode's concept. It features plenty of cast and crew interview clips, behind-the-scenes footage, and segments from the completed episode. Trials and Tribble-ations: An Historic Endeavor is a similar piece that looks at how the episode came about, focusing this time on the special effects that made the show work. Star Trek: TOS on Blu-ray is a piece featuring a panel of Niel R. Wray, Denise and Michael Okuda, Dave Rossi, and later, Writer David Gerrold, delves into the creation of the Blu-ray set and why it makes for an improvement over previous releases. Also included is the preview for "The Trouble With Tribbles."

Disc Five

'To Boldly Go...' Season Two is a retrospective piece that looks back on "The Trouble With Tribbles," Chekov's character, the stories behind "Amok Time" and "Mirror, Mirror," how Star Trek integrated the issues of the 1960s into Science Fiction, and more. Also included are the previews for each episode on the disc and BD-Live and Mobile-Blu functionality.

Disc Six

The primary supplement on disc six is Designing the Final Frontier is a look at the set designs for many of the episodes throughout Star Trek's three-season run. Also included are the previews for each episode on the disc and BD-Live and Mobile-Blu functionality.

Disc Seven

The final disc in this set begins with 'Star Trek's' Favorite Moments in which features both fans and the cast and crew of the various Star Trek series recalling their favorite episodes and the series' influence on their lives. Writer's Notebook: D.C. Fontana looks at the important role of writers, editors, and the script itself on Star Trek.

Life Beyond Trek: Leonard Nimoy, features the actor discussing what he's been up to since "Star Trek." Next up is Kirk, Spock, & Bones: Star Trek's Great Trio is a look back on the chemistry between the famed characters. Star Trek's Divine Diva: Nichelle Nichols features the actress looking back on her character. Also included are the previews for each episode on the disc, BD-Live and Mobile-Blu functionality, and the enhanced visual effects credits.

I feel that season two of Star Trek is the best of the original series and I also feel that it is the most important in the franchise's long history. Completing the cast by adding Pavel Chekov and debuting characters, setting trends, and introducing themes that would remain throughout Star Trek for a long time.

This is the ultimate edition of a beloved classic, whether you're a purist or someone that likes the new special effects. The remastered series was meant to be seen in HD.

If I was writing this review after seeing the season finale in May, I would have given the season a 3 star review. While it was still probably the funniest show on TV, it was losing quality.

Now, after seeing most of the episodes again, I gotta say it's much better. The laughs are still there, and they are still gut-laughs and cringeworthy. There are about 4 or 5 episodes I do not like, but even those are still okay.

Bottom line, even though it's not as hilarious as season 1-3 (and except for Arrested Development, I don't think anything is), it's still a solid 4 star season.

My husband is in an office setting for his employment. He finds this show to be way too funny and it is on his DVR top list. I work from home and I do not get it. I do not find it funny. I find the humor to be an insult to my intelligence. There is just no way that people are that stupid. I can not imagine that humanity has gone that far. I bought the target limited edition with the extra bonus stuff so if you can find it still it might be worth picking up. Target extras include:

* script of "Michael Scott Paper Company"

* 4 magnets. Surprisingly nice quality. One of Michael, Dwight, Jim and Pam with a quote for each.

* 47 minute Q&A with the writers at the Paley Center. This is why i bought the special edition. The first 5-10 minutes were boring and slow, especially since i noticed BJ Novak and Gene Stupnitsky were not present. I was regretting my 'special' purchase until about 10 minutes in when they discuss the rationale for the much-maligned scene where Michael Scott drives into a lake. After that, everyone loosens up, jokes around, and the Q&A becomes fun and interesting. 2 rows of writers, but the first row dominate the discussion(with Jen Celotta, Lee Eisenberg, Paul Lieberstien, Mindy Kaling, Mike Schur, Greg Daniels). It's about half moderator questions, half audience. Nice bonus disc. Arguably better than last seasons writer's convention extra, or at least as good with no shaky-cam too. Btw, the bonus disc comes in a seperate paper sleeve, and the 5-disc fold out set fits in its outer case without having to put the script in with it. Last year, if you bought the special edition that also came with a script and bonus disc, you would have to put the script with the dvd set together for it to 'fill' the case so it would fit.

Even if you don't get the 'deluxe' version, the basic one has plenty of extras with the usual funny deleted scenes(hrs!), lots of commentaries, gag reel(15 min), 100 episodes/100 moments(a lightning fast greatest scenes of sorts at 9 min), promos, webisodes(20 min), and a Q&A with the cast(30 min). But why was this only 30 min? Seems a waste to have all those people there including all the majors, and edit it down to just 30 min for the dvd. Anyway, another good season imo. But having gone through it again on dvd i still say seasons 2 and 3 are the best still. But with all the epsiodes and extras on this set, it's still a must buy for any Office fan. Highly recommended.

These episodes are hilarious. There are so many classic moments: Dwight and Jim's faked phone call to determine if Dwight's too aggressive while Michael watches because they both get poor performance reviews (though there's an interesting explanation for that); Dwight coming in dressed in Cornell clothing and Andy's reactions to it; Andy yelling "Are you blind?!" to Erin than trying to cover it up; The scene with Andy sneaking up on Dwight with his hybrid, which is just so, so funny. Speaking of Andy, he's quickly become one of my favorites, if not my number one favorite. Dwight was awesome this season and though I don't care much for Ryan's character, B.J. Novak's a really good actor. His progression as a character is impressive. Steve Carrell also deserves notice for being great per usual. The 5th season is long and satisfying (that's what she said), and it gets the most bang for the buck, the season is 26 episodes on 5 discs in a little over 10 hours. There's also over 3 hours of deleted scenes that integrate easily with the show. They're also the best deleted scenes I've ever seen. The first and last episodes deleted scenes are particularly good, but there's plenty of laugh out loud deleted scene moments, which is pretty amazing. Many episodes have commentary for the truly obsessed, and on top of that, all the webisodes made so far are also included. The webisodes aren't too bad either, they give a chance for the minor characters to shine. I truly don't believe this show has lost its touch, I laughed a comparable amount to past seasons, maybe even more and all I can hope for is another few seasons on par with this one... or even better.

Since the beginning of their marriage, Carl Frederickson (Edward Asner) and his wife Ellie (Elie Docter) have yearned to move to Paradise Falls in South America. Smitten by his childhood hero, explorer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), Carl and Ellie scrimp and save, but contingencies force them to open their savings jar until one day Ellie passes away, and Carl is forced to live alone with his dream broken and nothing but his memories intact.

Around his house construction workers are building new city buildings, and a job foreman coaxes Carl to sell his house. One day Carl confronts a worker who damages his mailbox, and the ordeal sets Carl up to be placed in a nursing home. Carl then meets a young boy scout who wishes to earn his final merit badge, assisting an elderly person. The boy gets more than he bargained for as Carl desperately tries to regain his footing and elude those who would change his life forever.

Colorful and cute, Carl's journey and the characters he encounters are enough to enthrall, but the story is even more transporting. The peril is enough to keep even teenagers interested, yet keep their sympathies for the elderly intact. The way the animated scenes unfold is the most engrossing aspect of yet another successful Pixar project.

Well... I'll keep this short and concise.

This is terrific film where everything is simply great: screenplay, dialogs, casting, direction, special effects, cinematography, music, action sequences, jokes, performances, direction, etc, etc, etc... I simply cannot find a flaw in this film that is worth noting.

More than a Summer blockbuster, STAR TREK is a quality blockbuster made with lots of care and love.

Some die hard fans were quick to note all the divergences from the original source. But, hey... this is NOT the original thing. It is reinvention that manages to keep all the fundamental elements that work while giving itself the freedom to breath some fresh ideas that ALSO work. So in my opinion, this film has lots of respect for all the audiences that are targeted here: old fans and new ones.

Basically, the film tells the story of how all the Enterprise crew members met (Kirk, Spock, Uhura, McCoy, Scottie, Sulu and Chekov) upon the backdrop of two main narrative drives: personal (how the clashes between Kirk and Spock shaped their friendship) and plot (they must prevent a mad Romulan who came from the future from destroying the Earth). Obviously, the actual story has many twists that I do not want to spoil...

So I think this is a beautiful film that deserves to be seen. One last note: all the actors are fine. In fact, this is one of those projects where everybody seems to be loving what they're doing.

This film goes so very far towards putting *fun* and humor and humanity and wonder back into the series. Everything Abrams touches turns to gold. The original trek was all about **adventure**. Sure, I loved TNG like everybody else, but somewhere between Picard rhapsodizing about English drama and literature and Janeway's wearing wooden knickers all of Trek turned stale. I'm not even sure if Riker had flexible knees -- that's how static and inflexible the acting and the action became.

I liked the original movies. Except, somehow, everyone inovlved in them became batseething crazy. Just, crazy. Did you see Star Trek V: The Final Frontier? What the hell was that about? Great -- Shatner wants to direct. They never let Mr. T direct on the A-Team. There's a lesson to be had there.

The TNG movies were also unpredictable. I liked the last one, but I've seen episodes of Webster that were more riveting than Insurrection. Webster in Spanish. On Betamax.

This movie is fun. Short skirts are back -- and not on dudes. Stuff explodes. Space karate is had. And it's still smart and moving and meaningful.

And just think about how awesome its going to be now that all the introductions have been made.

If you're all sloshy and bothered by the new vision, please just consider that its all in an alternate timeline. If that doesn't work, well -- hmm. Maybe Trek isn't for you anymore. Maybe you've just lost touch with quality pop culture. Maybe you don't remember Sulu running around with that sword. Fencing, dude. He's into fencing.

And that's your canon.

What a delightful movie! I forgot how wonderful this classic truly is. I went to see "Wizard of Oz" last night at a special viewing for the 70th anniversary. It was a treat to see this film in high definition. The color was vivid and crisp. The scenes in Munchkin Land were incredible-a perfect example of the vivid color and detail. With this new remastered and digitally enhanced film, you see many details you probably missed before.

The songs are still enjoyable and beautifully done, especially Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" (which won the Best Song Oscar in 1939).

It is a fun movie for every age-something the family will watch over and over. Even after some years since seeing it last, I still remember every word to every song and dialogue.

Another aspect I forgot about was the humor. Bert Lahr's portrayal of the Cowardly Lion was playful and great fun.

This is a classic every home should own. It is a movie that will never grow old and will become a family favorite-unless it already is. If you are like me and grew up watching "Wizard of Oz" on TV every year, seeing it again will make you young again. Everything about this movie is perfect.

Reviewing a film like `The Wizard of Oz' almost seems as pointless as reviewing `Titanic' or `The Godfather'; there really isn't much more you can say that hasn't already been said. It's a classic film that has been seen by millions, nearly every living, breathing soul, and it is lauded and loved and praised so much that doing so anymore almost seems like overkill. I reviewed `The Godfather' to the best of my ability, and so I plan on reviewing this one as well, despite the lack of necessity.

I also plan on one day reviewing `Titanic', although I already have on this site once under another name and felt the review was spot on perfection, so writing another seems almost cruel.

I want to start by saying this; I saw `The Wizard of Oz' for the first time about 6 months ago. I know, I know; the immediate response is "what rock did you just crawl out from under" and that is perfectly acceptable. To be honest, I did see the film one time when I was almost too young to remember. I guess I didn't like it too much because I had no desire to see it again, and so I didn't. As my daughter keeps getting bigger my wife and I are adding to our children's movie collection and the topic of this film came up. My wife was all for it, and the great husband that I am gave in and decided to sit down and give it another go. So when I say that I saw `The Wizard of Oz' for the first time 6 months ago I mean that I SAW it, as in I really completely took it in.

And then I went and saw `Wicked' and was completely blown away, but that's for another conversation.

So, what makes `The Wizard of Oz' so special? The answer is right at its center; the heart. There is so much love and joy wrapped up in this intriguing (yet rather simple) tale of a young girl who is taken from her home and thrown into a world she can only imagine. Filled to the brim with characters as vibrant and likable as they are strange and intimidating, Oz is a fantastical world unlike any other in the history of cinema. Dorothy, along with a few friends, makes her way down the yellow brick road to ask the wizard to send her home. Along the way she meets the dastardly Wicked Witch and is given the seemingly impossible task of defeating her.

Some have analyzed the meaning of `Oz' (which, to be honest, it quite self explanatory), and I applaud their dedication to their analysis. Yes, `Oz' delivers to us the blessed realization that, with a little heart, a little brains and a little courage we can do anything. To me though, the purpose of `The Wizard of Oz' is to excite our senses and put a smile on our faces; and it does just that.

Judy Garland delivers a star making turn here as the young Dorothy. With a voice that could warm the coldest of souls, and the needed layers of naivety and strong willed determination, Garland sours above the rest and makes her mark as an iconic screen presence. The supporting cast is also marvelous, from Ray Bolger and Jack Haley (and especially Bert Lahr) to Billie Burke and Frank Morgan. Margaret Hamilton is absolutely remarkable as The Wicked Witch, completely shrill and ultimately terrifying. It's as if the role was written for her, and to hear it from her agent you'd think that it was.

So, all in all this is a sublimely beautiful movie that the whole world has fallen in love with, and for good reason. Hopefully this one will bring a smile to your face as it has mine.

I'm sure it already does.

"A few words about The Wizard of Oz" 2009-09-08

The Wizard of Oz is such a uniquely American classic movie that a simple review wouldn't really do it justice. You have to see it (and maybe more than once) to appreciate it. It will never be remade because the talented artistry that developed, composed and performed it can never be reproduced. Even though I have seen it millions of times I never tire of it or become bored with it; the opening sequence, Glenda the good witch, the threats of the wicked witch and Dorothy's dilemma, all come together to develop such a wonderful movie, where do I begin? It has all the elements of an excellent cinematic experience; for its time, really convincing special effects, an excellent screenplay and lyrics, really fun singing, dancing, and acting; genuine feminine innocence versus bold, calculating, nefarious designs (modest enough to convey the concepts of good and evil to a young audience) showing that effort and tons of courage really do pay off. It's a great childrens classic because it shows that children can see what's going on around them and if they choose to get involved and strive towards a goal they can. Much simpler than that though, it is entertainment at its very best which has stood the test of time and encouraged many a heart, young and old alike. Winner of two Academy Awards: One for best musical score, and the second for best song. It was also nominated for best picture, best special effects, and best art direction.

Look, we love The Wizard of Oz as much as the next movie maven, drama queen, Judy junkie, Baum buff, Toto tooter and Lahr lover. And we've seen it 5,678 times on both the big and small screens. And we seen it restored and remastered and crammed with all the "bonus tracks" Warner likes to insists are "new."

But this time, Warner is not only reissuing it the flick in Blue-ray, but they have teamed with Turner Classic Movies and some outfit called NCM Fathom and showing around the country in an event that bears the original title, The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Hi-Def Event.

In other words, try it before you buy it.

For one-night only, Wednesday, September 23 at 7 p.m., 449 selected theaters across the country will be showing Oz, "first time ever in high definition."

The flick will be introduced by our pal, TCM host Robert Osborne, who will share facts and stories about this ageless classic. (Mr. O will be on screen, not in the theaters.) We are promised this will be The Wizard of Oz like you've never seen or heard it before!

The screening will also include an "exclusive cut" of To Oz! The Making of a Classic, which offers audiences a unique peek into the Land of Oz through interviews with original Munchkin actors; an audio outtake of "If I Only Had a Brain" with Ray Bolger and July Garland, complete with stills and home movie footage; and a look at how the MGM artists and craftsmen created the music, costumes and amazing special effects for The Wizard of Oz in the '30s.

Warner Home Video swears that once the "limited, numbered version" packages of The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition are sold out, "they will never again be available to consumers."

Too much straw in their heads? Obviously they never hard of eBay.

All this Oz hoopla kicks off on Thursday, September 24, in Madhattan with a series of "sparkling events."

There'll be an "Emerald Gala" at the Tavern on the Green, hosted by its owner and CEO Jennifer Oz LeRoy, granddaughter of The Wizard of Oz producer Mervyn LeRoy. (Let her explain her middle name: "My grandfather declared I would be forever tied to it by giving me Oz as my middle name and the movie has been integrated into family celebrations all my life.)

The restaurant and grounds will transform (just for a night) into Emerald City, replete with a winding Yellow Brick Road. To make the event politically-incorrect, five of the original wizened actors who played Munchkins will be hauled out.

And Judy's younger daughter, Lorna Luft, will once again dig into her Mama's past to "honor her mother's legacy with a special musical tribute." (Luft played the Wicked Witch in a London 2008 stage production of The Wizard of Oz.)

After all, this years marks the 40th anniversary of Judy's death. On the morning of June 22, 1969, Judy's fifith and final hubby Mickey Deans woke up to an empty bed. He called for his wife. The bathroom door was locked. He banged again and again. No answer. Deans climbed onto the roof of the flat and peered in the open window. There was Dorothy Gale, Mrs. Norman Maine, Frances Gumm, dead, at 47, her arms on her lap; her head slumped forward, on the toilet. Deans crawled through the window. Judy's skin had turned blue, and blood was gushing from her nose and mouth. A comeback was certainly out of the picture.

It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. --Robert Horton

"Whatta crapfest!" 2009-09-25

I'm a big fan of X-men/Wolverine, so I was excited about this movie. Big disappointment. In the first 5 minutes, we see a young Logan grow out little baby bony claws. I immediately thought "uh oh", and boy was I right. I waited for it to get better, but it never did. Skip it. Revisit the Wolverine/X-men franchise in 5-10 years when they get new actors (or when CGI can make Hugh Jackman look about 30-35 again). Hugh's my age, and he seems like a great guy, but I'm too old to play Wolverine too. You've been warned.

I waited to see this until it was on DVD because I had had my serious doubts about this movie, largely due to what I had heard as well as the lingering bad taste X-Men 3: The Last Stand had put in my mouth. I pop this movie in to watch with a friend, and I am instantly regretting my decision. This movie does not take itself, the characters/history, or the viewers seriously. I must admit though, this movie is kinder to the history of the characters than The Last Stand was. The character most badly mauled in this was Deadpool, who coincidentally was the coolest in the early part of the movie, and probably had the most chance for an awesome future. Instead the director/writer/morons in charge decided it would be a good idea to introduce some stupid plot twist involving Wolverine's love life and family and whatnot. The plot in this movie can be, and should be, ignored, as the only things the movie have to offer are some decent special effects, though even then they are somewhat hokey. If you hate Deadpool, Wolverine, or any of the characters in this movie, then I recommend it thoroughly, otherwise stay away!

A very nice move but the problem is that you cant her the audio on a ps3 Even with the last update (3.0.1 ) if the settings on bit stream ; it should be on ( pcm ) such a waste not to hear the ( dts HD )

And for the move in some clips when a blue screen background it seems very obvious that the lighting and colors deifiers ( it could have been done better)

The final nail in the coffin for the x-men saga on film for me at least as a fan. Though this film made enough to warrant a sequel, you won't see me in the theaters paying hard earned money for that garbage.

The only thing they did right was casting Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and the symphonic score.

Fox please get Brian Singer back and do a real X-men sequel to the first two so we fans can forget the awful films that came after like X-3 by Ratner and this the worst of all. This film makes Ratner's film look like an absolute masterpiece in comparison.

"Another Season...Another Emmy!" 2009-09-24

"Great second season" 2009-09-23

If you liked Mad Men in its first seson, you will love the second season. We continue to see the life of these Madison Avenue men who live their hard boozing and womanizing lives while defining new territories in advertising. We also obersve the effects on their entourage, wives, secretaries etc. The series continues to concentrate on Don Darper who continues his time as a creative genius at Sterling Cooper all while suffering the effects of success: high blood pressure, excessive drinking. Overall the writing has improved and the season is somewhat less bleak than at the beginning. It provides perfectly a sense of the era it represents: the 60's. All the characters are strongly played, especially the women who are not just side characetrs as they sometimes are in such series. This is clearly the best series around at the moment so do not hesitate: it is indispensable.

"Amazing Show" 2009-09-22

I love that Mad Men is full of surprises and you really never know what to expect in the world of Sterling Cooper. I highly recommend this show, and owning it on dvd is the only way to watch it.

"Truly Amazing!" 2009-09-15

I have worshiped and adored Grey's Anatomy since the second season. It's been a ritual for me to turn off my phones and other electronic devices to glue myself to the television to watch this tantalizing series unfold. Although the show fell off the track in seasons 3, 4, and to some extent in the early part of this season; I watched every moment of it. The storyline with Izzie was just hard to deal with at times, but i stuck by it. I am so glad I did; the last half of the season was brilliant. SPOILERS follow: If you are a Meredith and Derek fan they have worked their issues out and are truly great this season. The addition of Owen Hunt has brought new life back to the series, and to Christina. While I wasn't to crazy about the pairing of Sloane and Lexie, they have really grown on me. The crossover episodes with Private Practice were wonderful. The hundredth episode is one of the best, but the finale is what left me with chills. From start to finish it is easily one of the most powerful episodes of the series. Meredith's realization of "John Doe's" identity as George was nothing short of incredible, the moment Izzie's memory returns and the she flat lines took my breath away, and Meredith's voice over telling the audience to say "I love you" to the people in our lives before they are gone makes you realize the importance of those three words. However the final scene is what really makes the episode, with Izzie going into the elevator with her "prom" dress, and the door opening to George dressed in his army uniform, as they both flat-line, you realize it is very likely that one of them will not come out of this alive. That scene is truly haunting, and the song that plays in that scene "Off I Go" by Greg Laswell makes the scene truly unforgettable. One thing I noticed is that the premiere, in terms of Izzie, mirrors the finale. Izzie, at the end of "Dream a Little Dream of Me (part 2)", gets into the elevator in her dress and it opens to Denny, who is major part of her story line for the season, and in "Now or Never" the elevator opens to George. Heartbreaking, heartwarming, and full of just plain heart Grey's does not disappoint. Buy this season of Grey's and watch every moment, even though at times it is frustrating, I promise when you get to the end it will all be worth it. If you're anything like me, you will want to watch it again and again to see what you missed the first time around.

"The fifth season started out a bit hokey but by the second half, this series soared to new heights!" 2009-09-15

In 2005, "Grey's Anatomy" became a critically acclaimed television series that would become ABC's top rated dramas and winner of two Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.

Created by Shonda Rhimes ("Private Practice"), the drama series revolves around a group of interns and their experience at Seattle Grace Hospital. As well, as a few of the other doctors of the hospital. Throughout the first four seasons, we see these interns become residents and experience relationship problems and also the stress and challenges they had to become a resident doctor.

For season five, "Grey's Anatomy" received its share of hype on entertainment magazines with rumors swirling of talent who were no longer going to be on the show and that tension was developing on the set. For this fifth season, the season did start off with stories that seemed a bit farfetched and a tad bit hokey, but for the most part, redeemed itself for the second half with solid storytelling.

"Grey's Anatomy - Complete Fifth Season - More Moments" is presented in Widescreen (1:78:1) - Enhanced for 16x9 televisions. When it comes to television drama series, "Grey's Anatomy" is one of ABC's highly rated dramas that although filmed in a hospital setting for the most part of the series, season five definitely indulges in beauty during a major wedding scene which featured solid cinematography. And speaking of the wedding, that was one of the most enchanting wedding scenes that I have seen in a drama series. Absolutely beautiful!

For the most part, the series looks good on DVD, nice good closeups and skintones are natural and during low light scenes, I didn't see any major noise or compression artifacts. For the most part, the fifth season does look very good on DVD.

As for audio, the series is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and the series is primarily dialogue and music driven. Dialogue is clean and understandable, while the music has always played a major part for the series and definitely enhances certain scenes. Personally, I found it much more appealing to have my receiver set at stereo on all channels.

The show is presented in English SDH, Spanish and French subtitles.

JUDGMENT CALL:

I have to admit that when "Grey's Anatomy" season five started, I thought the series has lost its vibe and was becoming another "ER" like-clone where stories would simply become to farfetched and hokey. But during the second half of the season, things simply changed. We started to get solid storylines that built-up to the best season finale for "Grey's Anatomy" ever.

I think part of the mystique about the series this season was the hype and gossip about what was going on behind-the-scenes. Who is leaving the show? Who isn't leaving the show? Would we even care for Izzie due to Katherine Heigl's behavior off-set? The lesbian storyline. The brain tumor storyline. Who is disgruntled? Who isn't being utilized all that much in the show. So, many things that could have gone wrong... but in the end, it was the writing for the series that managed to win viewers all over again.

From the cross-over with "Private Practice", the return of Denny, a wedding, many new characters and so much more... But personally, it was those final four episodes that made viewers remember why we stuck with over 100 episodes of this drama series. Although, I can do without the icicle impaling or the interns surgically experimenting on each other (which to me was just too campy).

As or the DVD, I was expecting episode commentaries (it would have been wonderful to hear commentary for the 1ooth episode and the season finale) and something a bit more for the special features section but for the most part, what is featured is quite satisfactory.

Overall, "Grey's Anatomy - Complete Fifth Season - More Moments" may have started out a bit hokey and farfetched but the season redeemed itself right at the end and had its most significant season finale ever. If you are a "Grey's Anatomy" fan, one again, another DVD box set worth adding to your collection.

"Back To Season 2's Standards **SPOILERS**" 2009-08-05

After Season 3 sucking in general, and Season 4 coming back until the writer's strike, I was a bit worried with the beginning of Season 5. It go go either way, and luckily the show went up, and towards the end, was back up to the standard that season 2 set.

New Characters: I was among those who didn't like Dr. Hahn, and wasn't sad to see her go. Arizona, her Peds Dr. replacement has been awesome, and I've loved her interactions with Callie. Mark and Lexie's relationship has been awesome to watch evolve. But Owen... omg Owen Hunt made this season for me. His character alone would be awesome, but his relationship with Christina has been my favorite of the season, and I'm glad he'll be back. Izzy and Alex FINALLY got their shizz together and decided to be mature responseable adults. Kind of. But her situation made it imparetive the they figure out their issues and get moving.

Meredith and Derek finally got all their major problems hammered out as well, so there wasn't a whole lot of drama there this season either.

I have to say this is my second favorite season, after season 2. I'm anxiously looking forward to Season 6 since we know who lives and dies, and to see how all the relationships play out!

"Grey's anatomy delivers again! Slow start, don't give up" 2009-08-02

Grey's Anatomy creater Shondra Rhimes does it again. The season started out great. The dream Mer had about Derrick left me glad that it was just a dream. I was iffie with the beginning of the Izzie and dead guy storyline, but knew that something amazing was going to happen. I was right. Elevator love letters was my favorite. (Other then the season finale). The best point made in this entire season was when Christina realized that Mer did change and she was healing. That opened a door for us to view Mer-Der in a new relationship and for Christina and Owen to take a chance. As for anyone that wonders why George fell to the back burner. The show has made no secret to him wanting out of his contract. T.R. Knight is an amazing actor and I hpoe to see him soon. They could never get a new actor to play George. The bottom line is, the redemption that Grey's gives is the moment they reveal what is going on with Izzie. It's a powerful story and I can't wait for Season 6 to come back. P.S. Thank for banning Hahn to the parking lot. She made me almost stop watching the show with her horrible attitude.

Season 5 was awesome from the very beginning. For some strange reason some people don't think so. They are insane. Grey's was the best it has been since season 2. Season 5 is full of great storyline!!! I will definitely be buying it the day it comes out. I love Christina and Owen, Meredith and Derrick, Izzie and Alex, Sloan and Lexie, and Calli and Arizona!!!! Buy it!!

Pure. Popcorn. Entertainment. That's an exact classification of director Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Think of Transformers 1 on crack. In other words, this sequel took all of the extreme elements that made fans love the first movie and increased them exponentially. The action is nonstop, with battles and explosions from start to finish. The camera (without any subtlety) exploits Megan Fox's hotness to the max. As if she weren't enough, a new sex kitten (Isabel Lucas) is thrown into the equation. Shia LaBeouf is as charismatic as ever, and fills the starring role with ease. And then there's the humor. Sam's parents (Kevin Dunn and Julie White)provided some semi-raunchy laugh-out-loud moments in the first movie, but now they take it to the next level. Sometimes it seems like they are trying a little too hard, but it is still hilarious.

As far as the “plot” goes, the writers didn't waste much time--it's really just a context for the giant-robot death matches and dramatic slow-mo sequences. The movie kicks off two years later where the Autobots have formed an alliance with the U.S. government, creating an elite team led by Major Lennox (Josh Duhamel), in an effort to snuff out any remaining Decepticons that show up. The bad guys keep coming, and it turns out that a much more menacing force than Megatron is out there--and it is looking for something on Earth that is tied to the very origin of the Transformers race. Fans of the franchise will be delighted by the addition of many new robot characters (there are well over 40 in the sequel, versus only 13 in the first). The second Transformers has shaped up to be one of the worst reviewed and most successful movies of all time. This strange pairing is really just an indication that this movie has one purpose: to entertain. The creators didn't want to waste time bogging down the action and drama with substance--which was arguably a good decision. --Jordan Thompson

Wolverine, fan favorite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. --Robert Horton
